Why does it matter?
Poor mental health is becoming increasingly common in todays fast paced society, it can have a significant impact on the person experiencing it as well as their family, friends, community and the wider economy.
Being in employment can not only provide a person with financial security, it also provides an identity, a structure in life, it provides contact with others and often friendships. Employment can make a person feel useful, give an opportunity to contribute towards the economy and to meet personal goals.
The causes of poor mental health can be complicated but one thing that we know is that being in employment contributes positively towards a person's mental health and wellbeing.
But we also understand that a persons employment can contribute towards stress on our mental health too.
Presenteeism in our workplaces (when someone is at work when they are not well, resulting in loss of productivity) is increasing year on year.
It is estimated by the Health and Safety Executive that yearly, approximately 2 million people experience a health problem that they feel has been caused by work – stress being one of the main problems.
1 in 5 people take a day off work due to their mental wellbeing however up to 90% feel they cant be honest about this being the reason.
A recent survey done by Time To Change reported approximately 49% of employees would feel uncomfortable talking to their manager about their mental wellbeing.
We recognise that wellbeing at work is high on most employers agendas and that a healthy workforce, is a workforce that is more productive, high performing, loyal and committed.
If you are concerned about mental health related sickness in your workplace and would like support to improve and nurture staff wellbeing, or increase awareness about mental wellbeing in your workforce – we can help!
