We’re Teesside’s leading local mental health charity and this month marks the start of our 25 year anniversary.
Since we were founded in 1995 we’ve provided support to over 35,000 people across Teesside. Gradually growing from a team of three to a team of 120, we now support 10,000 local people every year who are seeking to positively manage their mental health and emotional wellbeing.
From a dedicated children and young people service to specialist therapy for more complex mental health problems, wellbeing groups and a support network for older people, to its community outreach worker working with Teesside’s local Black, Asian and minority ethnic communities, we provide care and professional support to local people of all ages and circumstances.
Emma Howitt our Chief Executive sums up our anniversary and says: “We’ve supported our local community for 25 years, and in that time our work has evolved to meet the needs of the people and diverse communities that make up our local area. For the next 12 months we’re going to celebrate our anniversary by raising greater awareness of the importance of good mental health, showcase the many projects we deliver and the ways in which we can help, and reach out and connect with as many local people as possible.
“This year more than any other has been difficult for so many people. COVID 19 has had an impact the world over, but it’s had a particularly challenging effect here in Teesside. It has never been more important to talk about mental health and to encourage anyone who is struggling to cope to seek help, as we’re here for everyone in the community. The way we work has changed so much in the last 25 years, but 2020 forced us to adapt our support in ways we never imagined. We’re proud to have helped more people than ever before this year and we found new ways of reaching some of the most vulnerable and isolated people in our community. This is testament to the passion and commitment of our amazing team, the help from our selfless volunteers and the support of our community who have raised funds to ensure we can continue to serve and support the people of Teesside.
“25 years ago mental health was a taboo subject. No one talked about it and few people knew anything about it, unless they or someone in their family had been affected. In the last 25 years, that’s been transformed. We are recognising that mental health is as important as physical health. Stigma has reduced. There’s more help available than ever. I’m really proud of the contribution Middlesbrough and Stockton Mind has played locally in this change. Hundreds of volunteers, staff and supporters have played their part.
“There’s still much to do though. Some people in our communities get less help than others. For example, children and young people’s mental health needs to be a higher priority. We won’t stop until everyone knows how to look after their mental wellbeing and everyone who experiences a mental health problem gets the help they need.”
