What’s it all about?

The Service User Involvement movement in mental health has a long history dating back to 1620 with a Petition of the Poor Distracted People in the House of Bedlam (this was concerned with asylum conditions). Involvement is borne out of human rights and the need for justice, reason and inclusion.

Middlesbrough and Stockton Mind believes individuals who have experience of mental health issues and use services are experts with a wealth of knowledge to contribute to:

• improving services
  
• tackling stigma and discrimination
  
• supporting their own and other people’s mental health and well being.
  
  

Individuals and families who have chosen to get involved have told us of the positive impact on their lives:

‘more confidence’   ‘taking control’   ‘being active’
‘feel useful and valued’  ‘helps me get on with life’
